RESILIENCE IS INNOVATION

Industrial Generators

Winter Engine - Generator continues to support the Consulting and Specifying Engineers throughout Eastern Pennsylvania. We appreciate the opportunity to participate in the design of Emergency Power Systems — when a project goes smoothly, it benefits everyone involved.

TOTAL SYSTEM INTEGRATION

A power system is only as good as the parts that define it.

This isn't your typical power system. A Rehlko industrial power system is loaded with designed and manufactured components from Rehlko — generators, transfer switches, switchgear, controllers, and more — all engineered to work together as a single, integrated system. We engineer every detail down to the last bolt.

THE POWER BEHIND THE BACKUP

Transfer Switches

Transfer switches are industry-leading devices that safely transfer electrical loads between utility grids and backup generators. They are trusted in residential, commercial, and mission-critical applications to provide seamless power transitions, protecting facilities when utility power fails.

Two types of Transfer Switches

Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) primarily differ from Manual Transfer Switches (MTS) in their operation. ATS automatically sense power failures and switch the electrical load to a backup generator without any need for human action. In contrast, MTS necessitate a person to manually operate a lever or toggle to change the power source.

How do I know which one I should choose?

Manual Transfer Switch

When power outages occur, businesses can face significant challenges. For smaller organizations or businesses, investing in a permanent generator may not be financially feasible. Manual transfer switches are a more economical choice, with the caveat being that someone must be physically present to flip the switch when the power goes out.

Automatic Transfer Switch

Choose an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) if you need uninterrupted power during outages, cannot guarantee someone will be on-site to operate a switch, or utilize a stationary standby generator. ATS units automatically detect power loss and seamlessly switch the electrical load to backup power in seconds.

Opt for an ATS rather than a Manual Transfer Switch (MTS) if your situation aligns with any of the following factors:

  • Zero-Downtime Requirement: Essential operations—such as data centers, medical facilities, or businesses relying on continuous cold storage and communication—require the near-instantaneous power transfer of an ATS.

  • Unattended Properties: If the facility or home is frequently unoccupied, an ATS is essential to ensure backup power activates immediately without human intervention.

  • Stationary Standby Generators: If you use a permanently installed standby generator rather than a portable one, an ATS is generally required. Standby units rely on electronic controllers that must interface directly with an automatic switch.

  • Safety and Liability: ATS systems completely eliminate the risk of human error, such as switching power sources at the wrong time or failing to disconnect from the utility grid, which can cause dangerous "backfeeding" into utility lines.

  • Complex Load Management: If you have a larger setup, many advanced ATS units include built-in load management features that intelligently prioritize essential circuits when generator capacity is limited.
